Where We Are Heading

So much has changed over the course of century that it’s hard to even think that things were so much different then than as they are now. The early 20th century brought dramatic advances and changes in ideologies, medicine, politics, science, society, and technology that were very much a result of the Industrial Revolution of the previous century. In the United States, a shift began that produced a manufacturing based economy, which accelerated life at all levels in the most dramatic of ways: from a primarily agricultural economy to an increasingly more mechanized one; increased production--a shifting from artistic craft to mass production; increased demand for specialized knowledge and skills; the evolution of a social hierarchy toward a class system; increases in communications resulting in greater exchanges of knowledge and culture.

Where the Industrial Revolution basically transformed the way that things were done, the Enlightenment transformed basic worldviews and thought. This period in time realized a great shift in philosophical thought in particular, from one that was originally steeped in a system of shared beliefs and tradition toward one that was more concerned with reason and more humanistic views. It is generally viewed that the Age of the Enlightenment, which had its beginnings in the late 18th and 19th centuries, was contributory toward the emerging philosophical thoughts of the 20th century, even until today. The development in this shift was brought on by such individuals as: Bertrand Russell, Thomas Hobbes , Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Immanuel Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and many others.

Much of the emerging thought that arose during that period in time also gave rise and impetus to the development of such schools of thought as Communism, Existentialism, Feminism, Functionalism, Hedonism, Hegelianism, Hermeneutics, Humanism, Idealism, Kantianism, Individualism, Logical positivism, Marxism, Materialism, Monism, Naturalism, Nihilism, etc., among others. In one way or another, all of these schools of thought contributed to what is now known as Modernism. Modernistic views thus contributed toward the shifting away from a culture based upon traditional values and faith-based idealism to one of personal freedom and reliance upon self. While some have considered Modernism to be positive contribution to the world we live in, others have determined it to be an extreme detriment to humankind, even to the point of systematically destroying the basic foundations of faith, morals, and the belief in the existence of a divine creator—God.

When one actually begins to take the time educate oneself to find real meaning and real truth, the difference between falsehoods and outright lies, only then can one come to realize just how destructive Modernism has been on the ongoing development of humankind, both individually and as a whole. Even today, its negative effects can be seen and felt on all levels of culture and life. It is Modernism, in all of its various contrivances and disguises of “good” that has ultimately changed humankind from its foundations once formed upon morality and brotherly love, to one formed upon division, greed, materialism, and self-absorption. We have been divided into the categories of the “haves” and “have-nots;” the “upper-class” as distinct from the “middle-class” or “lower-class.” In doing so, we are pitted against one other…suspicious…angry…close-minded…INDIFFERENT!

There is little room for caring, for giving, for loving as in brotherly love. It seems that that is just where those who are kindred to these views want us to be. Modernism has opened the door to a dependence and wantonness on “things”, and has distracted us away from the more important in life. For example: today we are more apt to converse electronically by means of computer or cell phone rather than become personable with those around us; Some have a tendency to shun those whom we dislike or are not “like us” whether we want to admit it or not; We have even arrived at a point in time where it is “practical” and “necessary” to destroy life at the very beginning, and are fast approaching the point to destroy its end, all in the name of convenience. One day, we may find that we won’t even have the “choice” to decide what is best for ourselves. Someone will have the job to decide for us.

It could be said that Modernism has laid out the groundwork for this division, and socialism IS its groundwork. There is no freedom in socialism, only control. We are slowly being controlled and divided right in front of our eyes.

When we actually begin to actively care about not only ourselves, but also those around us who we encounter everyday, only then will there be change. We need to begin at the root, within our homes and families, and strive for what is right and just and good. We also need to return to God, because without Him, we have already lost the battle.

Words of Wisdom

“Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount.” --Omar N. Bradley

“To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.” --Confucius

"Only a life lived for others is worth living." – Albert Einstein

"Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can read."
    – Mark Twain

Let's Take a Time-Out...

This blog was created in order to attempt to bring some sanity back into our society. While the focus is primarily meant for American society in particular, the dreams, hopes, ideas, opinions, and thoughts that it may evoke are indeed offered for consideration to anyone throughout the world. It’s meaning and purpose is not to elicit hatred in any form, which will not be tolerated, but to attempt to find common ground among various people(s) in the hope that we humans could possibly come to a better understanding of each other AS humans.

Let's be honest...while much has changed over the course of a century of so-called progress for the “betterment” of humankind, so much more has been lost in the process resulting in a more derisive, divisive, greedy, suspicious, and hateful people. We wonder why there is so much death and war, too. It seems that the more we progress, the angrier and more negative and separated we become. Have we forgotten how interdependent we actually are? At least it seems that we don’t give it much thought or care to even think about it.

It wasn’t always this way, and it begs the question, “Why?” When, where, how did we stop caring—really caring about our fellow man and our state in life in general? Now is as good a time as any to stop...take a time-out...and really take a look at ourselves. Yes, ourselves! Where and when did we--
as a country, as people, as INDIVIDUALS--really go wrong to end up in such a state as we find ourselves today.

The dialogue can now begin...
